Van Cleef & Arpels Poetry of Time

Time doesn’t rush at Van Cleef & Arpels. It unfolds, pauses, drifts. It tells stories before it tells hours.

That philosophy comes to life in Poetry of Time, the Maison’s latest watchmaking exhibition now open at Central Ferry Pier 4 in Hong Kong through February 8, 2026. Set against the harbour in one of the city’s most iconic locations, the exhibition explores watchmaking through emotion rather than mechanics, asking visitors to reconsider what time can look like when it’s guided by feeling instead of precision.

“For us, time is not simply a measurement,” explains Julie Clody-Medina, President of Van Cleef & Arpels Asia Pacific. “It’s a source of wonder, of emotion, dreams, and storytelling.” That sentiment shapes everything about Poetry of Time, from how the space flows to what’s actually on display. The exhibition unfolds quietly, almost cinematically, with no heavy-handed explanations or ticking-clock urgency. Instead, visitors move through the Maison’s watchmaking universe in a way that feels intuitive and, at times, surprisingly moving.

The journey begins with heritage, showcasing archival timepieces dating back to 1906 when Van Cleef & Arpels first started creating watches. It’s a detail that often surprises people. The Maison is so strongly associated with jewelry that their century-long watchmaking history gets overlooked. Seeing those early creations sets the tone for everything that follows, a reminder that this isn’t a new chapter but a continuation of a long-held point of view.

From there, the exhibition opens into the behind-the-scenes world of craftsmanship. Workbenches spotlight the métiers including enamelling, engraving, and stone-setting, offering a glimpse into the expertise involved without becoming a technical lecture. At Van Cleef & Arpels, technique is always present but it never leads. The story comes first, the savoir-faire follows.

That storytelling unfolds across five poetic worlds: love stories, enchanted nature, poetic astronomy, fairies and ballerinas, and jewels that tell time. Each space explores a different way time can be expressed, not just read. The Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watches exemplify this approach perfectly. Two lovers meet on a bridge, pause together for a moment, then drift apart again, marking time through connection rather than numbers on a dial. It’s romantic without being saccharine, technically impressive without needing to explain itself. Love has always been part of the Maison’s DNA, rooted in its very founding, and these pieces carry that idea forward with a lightness that feels timeless.

In the poetic astronomy section, the automata bring a sense of magic that rewards patience. The Planétarium automaton in particular moves at the actual astronomical pace of planetary orbits, so slowly it’s almost imperceptible. You could stand there for minutes and barely register movement. It’s the kind of piece that reminds you not all movement needs to be dramatic to be meaningful, that some things are worth slowing down to witness.

What makes Poetry of Time especially relevant is how accessible it feels. This isn’t an exhibition designed only for collectors or connoisseurs. Clody-Medina spoke about how intimidating luxury spaces can be and how projects like this are about removing that barrier. You don’t need to know the mechanics, you don’t need to own a watch, you just need curiosity. And that curiosity is something today’s audiences have in spades. When there’s meaning, when there’s a story, people naturally want to lean in. They want to understand what sits beneath the surface, whether that’s a dial, a movement, or a moment frozen in time.

The exhibition space itself contributes to this feeling of openness. The layout is intuitive, designed to let you move through at your own pace without being bombarded by information. Each world unfolds naturally into the next, creating a journey that feels more like experiencing art than browsing product. The harbour location adds another layer, grounding the exhibition in Hong Kong’s urban landscape while offering views that remind you of the larger world beyond the interior spaces.

If visitors leave with anything, Clody-Medina hopes it’s a sense of wonder. That feeling she describes as “stars in your eyes.” A small reminder of imagination, of emotion, of time as something to savour rather than schedule. In an era where luxury brands constantly push technical innovation and record-breaking complications, Van Cleef & Arpels is doing something different. They’re asking people to slow down, to feel, to reconsider what a watch can be beyond a tool for measuring hours.

Poetry of Time doesn’t feel like an exhibition you tick off a list. It feels more like a pause, a gentle recalibration, a space where craftsmanship and creativity work together to remind us that time, at its most beautiful, is felt. Open Monday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm at Central Ferry Pier 4 through February 8, 2026.
